How cat years are calculated
The old "one cat year equals seven human years" rule is inaccurate. Cats mature very quickly: by their first birthday a cat is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human, and by two years about 24. After that, each cat year is roughly equal to four human years. This calculator uses the widely cited conversion from the AAHA/AAFP feline life stage guidelines. For kittens under one year it uses an approximate month-by-month scale.
Feline life stages
| Life stage | Cat age | What it means for care |
|---|---|---|
| Kitten | Under 1 year | Kitten food, vaccination series, socialization, spay/neuter |
| Young adult | 1–6 years | Yearly check-ups, weight control, dental care |
| Mature adult | 7–10 years | Consider baseline blood and urine tests |
| Senior | Over 10 years | Check-ups every 6 months, blood pressure, watch weight and mobility |
How long do cats live?
Many indoor cats live 15 years or more, and some reach their twenties. Good nutrition, a healthy weight, preventive vet care and a safe environment all help. See senior cat care.
