Temperament and personality

Burmese cats are affectionate, playful and extremely people-focused. They are often described as dog-like — following you, greeting you and wanting to be part of family life. They are usually excellent with children.

They do not enjoy being alone and can become unhappy without company.

Size and appearance

Compact and muscular, surprisingly heavy when picked up, with a short satin coat and golden eyes. Sable brown is the classic color.

Activity and enrichment

Active. Daily interactive play and climbing opportunities.

Coat care and grooming

Very easy — a weekly rub with a chamois or rubber mitt.

Typical health concerns

Every cat is an individual, and most cats of any breed live long, healthy lives with good preventive care. These are the conditions most often discussed for this breed — ask a breeder for health-testing results and discuss screening with your vet.

  • Diabetes mellitus — more common in Burmese from some lines; keep them lean.
  • Hypokalemia (low potassium) — DNA test available.
  • Feline orofacial pain syndrome.
  • Burmese head defect in some American lines — DNA test available.
