Temperament and personality

Birmans are gentle, affectionate and even-tempered. They enjoy company, follow their people around and are usually good with children and other pets. They are playful without being hyperactive and have soft, quiet voices.

Like most social breeds they are happiest when not left alone for long periods.

Size and appearance

A colorpoint cat with a silky, semi-long coat, deep blue eyes and pure white paws ("gloves"). Medium-large and sturdy.

Activity and enrichment

Low to moderate. Daily play sessions and a cat tree are enough.

Coat care and grooming

The silky coat has little undercoat, so it tangles less than a Persian's. Brush two or three times a week.

Typical health concerns

Every cat is an individual, and most cats of any breed live long, healthy lives with good preventive care. These are the conditions most often discussed for this breed — ask a breeder for health-testing results and discuss screening with your vet.

  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).
  • Chronic kidney disease is reported somewhat more often.
  • Corneal sequestrum (an eye condition).

  • are a first-time cat owner

Think twice if you…

  • are away all day, every day
