Temperament and personality

Siberians are confident, playful and people-loving, with a reputation for being "dog-like". They greet their families, enjoy games and get along well with children and pets. Despite their size they are agile and love to jump and climb.

They are adaptable and generally less demanding than very high-energy breeds.

Size and appearance

Powerful and rounded with a thick, triple-layer semi-long coat, a full ruff and a bushy tail. Many colors and patterns.

Activity and enrichment

Fairly active. Daily interactive play, sturdy climbing structures and puzzle toys are recommended.

Coat care and grooming

Brush two or three times a week; more during the heavy seasonal shed.

Typical health concerns

Siberians are generally healthy. About allergies: some studies suggest that some individual Siberians produce lower levels of the main cat allergen, Fel d 1 — but levels vary widely from cat to cat and no cat is allergen-free. Spend time with the specific cat before committing.

  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) — ask for heart screening in breeding cats.
  • Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) occasionally.

Who is the Siberian right for?

A good match if you…

  • want an affectionate, playful family cat
  • have mild cat allergies and can test contact with the individual cat first
  • have kids or other pets

Think twice if you…

  • have severe allergies or asthma
  • want a low-shedding cat
